Tribal, The Prequel Ch2

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious

Hector and I spent several days going over the plans for my meet-up with a small tribe in the mountains and my exfiltration at the end of the mission or in an emergency. There wasn’t much sense of nervousness or caution that comes with dangerous missions in hostile territory. My presence was worked out through the State Department with the pretense of cultural studies to increase the trade of natural resources between the U.S and Viet Nam. The post-war period had settled and most of the animosities were buried below the surface under a pile of dollars.

There was little to no government influence in the Central Highlands where the tribal cultures still existed. The real mission was to see who was encroaching on the natural resources and killing the natives that interfered. While all of this seemed altruistic, protective, and quite benevolent to me, I was blind to the old agreements of capitalism in the west and the constant hunt for resources to feed the ever-expanding and hotly contested global economy.

Hector (not his real name) was a strong man physically and mentally. He had the one weakness of a man condemned to noble work too difficult and unstable to raise a family. Hector liked unattached girls who would take care of his personal needs and logistics. To me, this was the weak link to our undoing, but I had to trust Hector and he needed to trust me. That meant ask no questions outside of the mission and don’t question the methods selected to achieve success.

Hector and I stayed out of view while his girl shopped, cooked meals for us, and ensured we had plenty of coffee until noon when we switched to beer. A few days before we drove up into the mountains for the handoff to the tribe, we did a few recon trips on the small motorbikes that ferried half the population along narrow congested roads. With helmets and local clothes, we looked like everyone else, except bigger. I had to ride and look small and detached. That might have been the hardest part of the mission because I saw myself in a near-death situation every 50 meters on the road. The most aggressive rider wins unless it’s a competition with an overloaded truck, then it’s best to graciously run off the road and take your chances in the turtle ditch.

As we scouted roadways and the terrain, I became more acclimated to the weather and environment. It was the usual hot and muggy during the day and in the higher elevations it got a tad cold at night. I like the cold but not while trying to sleep. Since I was going in with only what I could carry on my back, I was hoping the natives had some nice rustic hotel accommodations for me. My sarcasm survives to this day it seems.

To be continued.

  1. Geez, love this peek into your personal life, Hype. A regular Indiana Jones you were….keep it comin’!!! “Hector liked unattached girls who would take care of his personal needs and logistics.” Yeah, when I was younger…

Ha ha haaaa! Our generation all filtered through that phase, some more than others. Hector did not live to an old age where he could look back and remember his conquests fondly. I am doing it for him.

Some people were never meant to grow old. They lived hard and fast and never had the opportunity to doubt themselves and be filled with regret when the world sails past them. In some ways, we can be envious of those that will never grow old in memory.

          1. Don’t make me cry bro. Live fast, die young. I tried, but I’m still here. BTW, when writing my blog on a more consistent basis, many people asked me to write about Paul, and what he’s about. Well, Imma gonna start that now…and he may be a part of me…but he’s not me! (Well, between you and I he might be.) Since he’s going to start a new religion. he’ll have become a total narcissistic psychopath because those are ACTUALLY the type of people who run the world. Dracul seems very religious, so he might not like Paul either. Because the Church of the Infinite Void doesn’t believe in anything! Moohahahahahaa! I’m winding up and getting into character. I wonder what happened to Sha’ and if she’s still alive?

Hi George! Somehow my comments aren’t showing up. Glad I circled back. I agree, life should be approached with the same gusto as a hound dog on a hambone. Get some living done so when the hammer drops and you get escorted off the planet, it’s a relief because you needed the rest before going back into the game. As I’ve said before, I am a big fan of the void. I can’t wait to see how Paul nanites us right into the front seat by the event horizon of our very own galactic black hole. We’ll be staring right into the void.

I’ve had the good fortune of being in places that have large populations of monkeys and there is no doubt in my mind where our behavior patterns came from. We seek adventure and solitude to discover who we are and all we ever had to do was go visit the monkeys at the zoo. 🫣🐒

I Deem your statement not only plausible but probable. Now all we need to do is stop rummaging around in the cosmic fairy tales and plug into the void. I’m ready, Bro.

I like where you are headed. Our new age scientists are no longer constrained to what religion allows nor the prevailing thoughts of the 1800’s. We are forging ahead with some truly mind bending theories of the cosmos and the forces of nature that control it.

Thank you so much, Rene. I am recounting experiences from the perspective of the period and so much of what I say and do is not how we are as a society today, but how I and others were in the past. It may confuse some and anger others. You can count on it to be adventures that are still ongoing in the exact places I will take you. In many ways, I try to understand that after all these years we are still trying to preserve a part of the human story that lives in the DNA of all living things and especially in humans. Recently, a British man working with the same tribe I worked with in South America was murdered by poachers who wanted to keep their activities secret. The threat is real and it takes a brave soul to enter into the territories at the boundaries of desperate need, corporate and government greed, and the lives of simple people lived out in the same way we all lived 50,000 years ago. Progress is a double edged sword that cuts the sword master equally as deep as it cuts into the past. I feel better with a few close friends to share the ride.

      1. It does take a brave soul, this experience aroused both anxiety and excitement. I know this is leading to a stunning adventure and amazing accomplishments otherwise one would not undertake this “journey” into the relative unknown. I really wish that you would compile this life story and put it between covers. Following you closely Dan.

  4. For one like me who has seen close to nothing of the wider world, these stories are like a window into it, and you not only have the natural storyteller’s ability, but also the insight into what it all means. I am quite naive and often forget the greed that’s behind so many, if not most, of the world’s problems.

I hope this window into the natural world will keep you coming back to it. While I want this to be mostly positive and enlightening, I would only tell half of the story if I didn’t include the underpinning of how native people are viewed and treated by the so called civilized societies. Stay tuned, it’s bound to get wild up in here eventually.

      1. Looking forward to it! Btw, just want to say, in reference to your comment on my post, I really do appreciate your understanding how I felt. Most of the commenters went for the whole “boundaries” thing, and I must say I’m mildly allergic to that term, because it’s often overused. It’s used in situations, frankly, when people don’t want to deal with their parents. And while parents/family can drive us crazy, nevertheless we owe a debt of gratitude to them, and ingratitude is just plain ugly anyway. I know the others meant well in their advice and obviously I was asking for different perspectives and experiences. But to get the gold nugget, we have to cast a wide net. I think that’s a mixed metaphor but you get my point.

I do get your point, Hetty and I sensed the need to step away from popular views to the fact that family is often all we have and they are worth the effort we invest, even tho that investment takes its toll. Family has no intrinsic ties to perfection and if we have no time for them, who would dare give of their time for us. I find love and kindness is often all that’s needed. That’s what we remember later. What you are doing is hard, yet it is the most noble thing a sister and daughter can do.
