Heroes of Annihilated Empires

“That is why I write – to try to turn sadness into longing, solitude into remembrance.”

Recently, something caused a fundamental shift in my awareness of my conjured reality. I finally began acknowledging my time was short on this angry blue planet. In an online conversation with two treasured blogoteer friends on WordPress, I read of one’s family life just beginning in a bittersweet way. Marriage and the birth of a son were tempered by grave illness on the paternal and maternal sides of this talented new family. Another long-standing author friend commented, and we started a side conversation about longing, solitude, and remembrance, something the older generations add to their daily contemplations. I promised to blog more this year and to keep in touch.

Below is an early post some years ago when I was practicing my writing by pouring out the realization that my days of conquering campaigns were over, and I was left with an ever-failing mind and body. At the time, I had no idea just how much a human body could take when the pain became unbearable, but the mind stayed happy and carefree, fueled by endless memories of a fantastic past. I have completely reinvented myself since then, and despite the concerns of doctors and their dire warnings, I continue to hold onto desire, humor, and an iron will akin to an intransigent jackass who refuses to cry when pain leaves him blind and breathless.

Heroes of Annihilated Empires

He sat silently at the table, his coffee hot with that smoky bite he enjoyed. He looked up to collect his runaway thoughts, then continued to read his dog-eared copy of The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli. Around him, life moved near light speed with dozens of smartphones illuminating entranced faces. Facebook connected ten thousand souls to only ten distracted minds milling around in half-dazed skulls.

Next to him sat a woman. He knew she was someone else’s love. Her hair was shoulder length and well groomed with highlights of honey blond glimmering in the sunlight filtering through the glass front of the coffee shop. His unconscious gaze saw she was well dressed in a blue dress, white blouse, and clean shoes. She read Loving Thoughts by Helen Steiner Rice. Perhaps thirty years ago, he once read this book when his long-gone wife left it on the kitchen table. He refused to acknowledge he might have been in the prime of life when he sneaked that peek at what interested his wife, perhaps to understand her better.

Before he could catch himself, his voice jumped free from his lips and across the table it carried.

“Great story. I enjoyed it myself long ago.” His hands felt a tiny tremor. He feared the coldness that must surely come his way.

She smiled and noted he knew good books and had an old classic; she could tell. He was delighted to share his memories so intrinsically tied to the ancient text of Machiavelli. The woman sat and listened to every tale and, in a few words, encouraged him on.

The God of Social Media silenced all the patrons but couldn’t silence the old man and the woman with clean shoes. He poured out his memories to her like marbles on a floor, and he remembered more every time he picked one up. The man took her polite smile as interest in his life. He could see things she held close to her heart behind her eyes as she looked at him while he rambled on.

In a long-held gaze, too long to be polite, he apologized.

“I can see that you have many memories too.” He sensed he had hurt her with stories of his youth without a pause to hear her. “I’ve said such things, I shouldn’t have.”

“No, it’s okay. She replied. Please continue. There is no place I have to go just yet.” Her voice was soft and distant.

He felt a deep shame that all this time he talked; it was a selfish need to never be alone with his thoughts. After a pause to admire her youth and appearance, the fellow in the 1980s Nike jacket continued on about places that no longer existed in the way he remembered them.

  1. Such a powerful piece of writing, my friend.

No wonder you became such a wonderful blogger if one of your early posts read like this.

What wonderful memories and a lifetime of adventure you’ve had.

Since so many of today’s young men are Communist, transgendered and queer in their thoughts (having been schooled and educated that way), no wonder the young woman in the blue dress and clean shoes found your memories so interesting and enchanting.

Thank you Chris! I truly did live a full life before social dissonance invaded nearly every place the public gathers. Dignity and grace with well trained manners is a thing of the past and I mourn that passing until I meet someone who keeps the standards high and doesn’t compromise to illicit behaviors.

  2. I am moved by the confessional style and deep poignancy of your writing Dan. I can feel the deep emotion of the narrator.
    Well done.

Thank you Rene! I have experienced a revival of poignant feelings. I am touched by the struggles of others and find a deep resonance across the WordPress universe. We are collectively feeling the full range of emotions as new lives are rising and the Elders give way to the new dawn. The angst comes from not knowing what this new dawn will bring us.

Sadly, this is very true and most prominent. And we all know that cults don’t get along with non cult members or members of other cults and so a genuine world war is at hand where the combatants are people of different angry and vindictive cults. It’s a true pitfall and nothing less than the future of humanity is at stake. I swore to try to do my part to educate the youth on better alternatives which I have undertaken and give a lot of my free time to. I don’t teach ideologies as there is no successful ideology that exists. I speak on individual decision making that supports a humane approach to behavior and building wisdom through intellectual pursuits that build positive experiences in a muddled and hateful world. There is no such thing as a good leader I the world today and so people gravitate toward forceful personalities even tho they are pure evil incarnate. This is nothing new if we consider the previous generations of Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, and Edi Amin as random examples. These despots are alive and well and in vast numbers across every continent such as Putin, Xi, and Baby Kim in North Korea or the Clergy of Iran and the Islamic Jihadists. This is a very short and wholly inadequate list but the fact remains that. 75% of the world are under the thumb of these people and the other 25% is falling deeper into that path. We have not known the true horror of conflict until we see it on every street corner in the world. It will happen unless better minds are raised among us. I am going for the better minds. It may be too late Rene, but I have sworn the remaining years of my life to the effort. Hopefully my cynical sense of humor won’t sabotage my efforts. I now have an amazing pathway to investors who think like me and a better plan is growing into a global strategy.

      2. Cultism is passed down from generation to generation. There are many educated young people who think for themselves , hoping they will continue to see the light through the dark conspiracies perpetrated by those who would rule with the iron fist of a Hitler Or Mussolini, not only in our own country but around the world.

Exactly! And it’s those young future leaders I want to encourage. There are now over 40 conflicts going on causing mass migrations and destroying fertile lands and millions of lives. These conflicts cover every continent that falls above the equator. If you trace the causes you find it’s because of the despotism of only a few men. How can it be that 100’s of millions of people can be destroyed by a dozen men. The answer is simple and stunning. They own the armies that do the killing. Martial cultism is the most dangerous on the planet.

Thank you Rene. It means a lot. It’s possible to make a difference if we try. Our future is very dim if we don’t.

              1. Knowing me, you may have guessed that this was not all of my original comment. It is disturbing to read that there are those who obsess on issues such as gay rights and imagining that our youth are in line with communism and other social matters rather than recognizing the real threats to our country and the world. It is such shocking ignorance that stems from conspiracy theories and bigotry.

Yes, I know you feel strongly like I do.Iit’s very hard for me to watch this happen. I call myself a moderate which both sides of the extreme hate. But I paid a high price for 41 years devoted to what I felt were the right things. Seeing all of that thrown away for absolute petty tyranny based on false notions does not sit well with me. Youth make bad choices and take high risks when they have nothing to look up to guiding them on a positive path. Life is much harder for them than when I was their age and everywhere they look there are slick and shiny predators vying for their minds and bodies. What a hell to grow up in. Freedom and liberty in America is almost a conspiracy theory. We kid ourselves with nationalistic and socialist rhetoric and we have no clue what those two things are. Neither allows personal agency to choose a life of one’s own. We the people need to wake up and look around.

                  1. I don’t think our kids are preyed on but for the child traffickers such as Epstein who was found guilty of blatant use of children for sex … and who should show up at many of his gatherings surrounded by young pubescent girls… Trump, and yet he is held in high regard by the supposed Christian Right.
The gay population is not grooming our kids, that’s BS the radical right are pushing .
I’m a moderate , but I understand the frustration of our youth who are brave enough to protest the NRA as they go to school not knowing if they will go home or face a mass killing at their school while the GOP feather their nest with NRA funds .
Marco Rubio, a GOP Senator from Fl ranks number five in NRA payments.
                    Rant over.

We certainly do know of the blatant iniquities our societies face. The NRA will disappear the day after people stop funding them so they can’t buy up government representatives. Their fear monger campaign has been very effective and the cost of their campaign is underwritten by the blood of slaughter and mental illness.

What shall I discover? What tales of love and adventure do you have to share? It is questions like these that make life worthing living.

Glad to hear from you my wise friend. Much of what you predicted in the past has come to pass regarding the shenanigans of certain public figures. We do have until the 31st so a Happy New Year to you as well. We’ll make the best of what we have and be thankful we have what is ours to hold onto.
