What does BS Look Like?

Artful speech and an ingratiating demeanor rarely accompany virtue. – Confucius

As it turns out, I do find time to return to the thing I love from time to time, which is the examination of virtuous living. In today’s world, our sense of liberty and personal freedom has come under attack from a multitude of directions. These attacks are greatly aided by science, technology, and the knowledge of social engineering.

So how do we know if we are sniffing BS or a finely crafted scotch whiskey made from peated barley? One way to know is the careful observation that some buffoon has their metaphorical butt in your face demanding you change your entire life to acknowledge their fantasy as your reality.

More subtle methods are at work to change your mind without you becoming aware of it. In fact, we all possess bad habits that lead us away from the happy endings we desperately seek.

Below, I have put together an outline of the ways our modern world attacks our sanity and convinces you they are the truth you seek. This outline applies to media reporting, university education, marketing, and your best friend you met yesterday, not to mention everything that your government tells you or doesn’t tell you.

Bad science, data fallacies, and pseudo science haunt us in every aspect of life. Academia and science are the leading purveyors of poop, but foreign states and greed are the true actors extraordinaire. Let the buyer of this foul biodigestive stuff beware.

Bad Science

  1. Sensationalized headline
  2. Misinterpreted results
  3. Conflicts of interest
  4. Correlation and Causation
  5. Unsupported conclusions
  6. Improper sample size (10% of population minimum, 30% recommended)
  7. Unrepresentative samples used
  8. No control group used
  9. No blind testing
  10. Selective Reporting
  11. Unrepeatable results (precision, accuracy, repeatability required)
  12. Material not peer reviewed

Data Fallacies

  1. Cherry picking- using only data that supports the desired outcome
  2. Data bridging – mixing different datasets
  3. Survivorship bias – concentrating on data from a selection process (filtered)
  4. Cobra effect – a solution results in unintended consequences often from linear thinking.
  5. False causality – assuming a previous event caused a following event
  6. Gerry mandering – political manipulation of electoral districts
  7. Sample bias – the sample does not accurately represent the group under study
  8. Gambler’s fallacy – the belief that the past is an accurate prediction of the future
  9. Hawthorne effect – When a subject changes their behavior due to the awareness of being observed.
  10. Regression fallacy – the assumption that something will return to normal because of a corrective action
  11. Simpson’s paradox – a statistical phenomenon where an association between two variables in a population emerges, disappears or reverses when the population is divided into subpopulations.
  12. McNamara’s fallacy – fixating on quantitative data (hard facts) only and ignoring qualitative data (subjective data)`
  13. Over fitting – when computer modeling is too closely fitted to the training data and cannot make accurate predictions on new data. A common AI problem.
  14. Publication Bias – failure to publish the results of a study based on the study findings.
  15. Summary metrics – a shortcut to a subtotal or measurement which does not have the context to explain the measurement.

Pseudo Science

  1. A study that starts with a conclusion then seeks supporting data
  2. Hostile to criticism
  3. Vague jargon to confuse and evade questions
  4. Grandiose claims beyond any evidence
  5. Cherry picks only favorable evidence with heavy reliance on testimonials
  6. Uses flawed methods with unrepeatable results
  7. Lone person working in isolation
  8. Uses inconsistent and invalid logic
  9. Dogmatic and unyielding

Now that you have reviewed this, have you seen examples of these problems in your private or public life, at work, or in topical conversations? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Bill Gates and his concerns about bovine flatulence seems to come most preeminently to mind for some reason.

A fellow blissfully unaware that he’s full of it.

  2. Say it with conviction and the people will believe you. Facts? There will be newer facts soon enough. Some have testified before Congress that “the facts” showed smoking does not cause cancer. They wore expensive white suits so they had to be telling the truth. The only facts worth following up on is “the money trail.” Who profits, who loses?

The money trail will lead every follower to the source of all evil. I would say Capitalism is not good for us, but I have seen the results of Democratic Socialism’s corruption and the rise of international Oligarchy. We will find a way to make greed pay off.

  3. Hell yes! Everyday day after day, year after year. I have no solutions do not what to start a crusade. Do you have a straight answer? Does anyone? I doubt it, it’s too fucked up. I may want to reblog, just letting it all sink in. 🙂 Couldn’t stay away, it’s in your blood. You have to release it.

Yes, M. I don’t want to stay away. I’ve looked at how I can stay engaged and still meet my obligations of caretaker duty. Compassion will work wonders. Now you have a BS checklist to validate or invalidate all the stuff thrown your way.

That must be the old website. The hyperionsky.blog should be shown as active. Darn WP Gremlins pop up everywhere. I bought a basic subscription and it replaced the free site.

I doubt he moved his stories to his new site, he’s like that but he kept me engaged for years. I could see every image and words he was projecting. Daniel & I know each other’s backstory very well and he has encouraged and taught me so much over the years. 🙂

                1. Thank you M. It’s true, our testimony of overcoming adversity has been longstanding and as we settle into our better versions of ourselves, who has stories to tell like ours? Many, no doubt, have conquered life and lived to tell about it as we have.

                1. Awesome! As I suspected the WP AI had made my profile a mess. I think I momentarily have it working now. I’ll keep blogging and story telling but for a long time, I’ve kept my home life to myself. Finally, I realized I need to tell everyone that life demands attention and so my appearance here will be a bit sparse until things settle down a bit. Feel free to reblog anything that interests you here.

Indeed, my friend, we seem easily led by those things that resonate with us or exert power over us. If we are prone to those misleading examples of bad science or false information ourselves, we can’t develop the proper discernment to know something isn’t all that it seems to be. Yet, like yourself, many do know they are surrounded by iniquity and the first casualty is trust. To be a good example of positive virtue can also mean one becomes a martyr. Thank you for calling it as you see it and commenting.

  6. Love the lists. I recognize a lot. No wonder I’m a skeptic, gregariously hidden by art (which speaks in itself, of itself and for itself)

As a matter of fact my N & I were discussing some Canadian issue that falls under Data Fallacies #14.

I’ll show him this post in the morning. Thank you Dan!

    1. I’m glad you recognized and even experienced some on the list, Resa. It means you are a clever and discerning artist. This is a list of common brain functions when performing analysis of some subject of interest. There are strengths in unity of thought and so we have created ways to trick others into agreeing. We humans were never meant to be taken seriously and so that was the first folly committed back when the caves were full of people who didn’t like to go outside.

      1. Cripes, I don’t want to trick anyone into anything. Then again, I may not know if I am doing so.
Anyway, terrific BS list. Think I’ll print it out for further discussion with N.

        1. Please forgive my sarcastic humor. The source of the list is an outline of what I learned first as a strategic planner for the U.S. military and then as the head of the U.S. measurement sciences research and development program. While solid principles of development are well documented and even required by law, in every echelon of civil and government research, I had to fight hard to keep these negative traits from undermining projects that cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. I did a lot of international work and Canada was a big partner. It was amazing to see how these different negative trends were prevalent in society and government. This is when I began to research the reasons for these one way tickets to failure. The results of that study basically pointed to human nature as part of our ego protection that is hardwired into our psyche. Next, and most important, is how these weaknesses are openly exploited by news, marketing, and hostile governments. So, I put this out there for people to examine and then put it to the test. I hope you and Mr. N can use this as a way of filtering out the BS that seeks to trick you and others.

            1. Yep! We are all nervous and I do believe that we can all pull together if we hold on to good virtues and right thinking. Those two things are universal and don’t need translating. The best way to do that is remain humble and be a good example. I think you have already mastered that and I’m working hard on it. 🤗🕊️

  7. A very good list Dan. We are submerged in that all the time. Worst case is that journalists are increasingly confusing facts (reporting) and opinion (editorialising). At least in the French media. (I suscribed to the New Yorker for a while, but they still write 10,000 words articles…)

As a counterpoint, here’s an anecdote about Georges Clemenceau, a French Politician who was “Premier” during WWI and helped win the war. When he was not in the opposition he had a newspaper. He would tell each aspring young journalist:

“Young man.” (Not many women then) “You will now write in my paper. A few rule. Write complete sentences with subject, verb and complement. Use adjectives with extreme restraint. And if you feel like you want to write an adverb, call me.”

    😉

  8. When I read #9, I immediately thought of the double slit experiment. (Particle/Wave). Things change when observed. Maybe everything, on every level, changes when observed. I think that’s true.

But I understand what you mean about telling a lie and purposely getting people to believe it, while knowing it’s a lie, and will be changed once the liar has what he wants.

Selective reporting is all there is. At least it seems that way.

    Great lists. Thank you.

    1. Your awareness of the double slit experiment made me smile. A lot of people give up on physics when confronted with this even in a video explanation it can cause some to fall out of their chair and bump their head. We live in a world where the truth supported by facts is just plain boring. Wild imaginative things hold sway over everything. I get it though. When I was a kid, I thought Peter Pan could really fly and Tinker Bell infatuated me. It wasn’t an unpleasant lie that I lived. The only issue was I could never find Tinker Bell and Peter Pan never answered my post cards.

        1. I’m actually not sure if she is real or not. Like you said, things change under observation. I never found her, but I never gave up either. I may have to plan a trip to Neverland and see if she is there.

          1. Oh, what a great idea. I know Peter Pan is here, at least a lot of women say he exists in the men they know. LOL But Tink is a whole different thing. If you find anything please let me know. I’ve never been there, but watch out for pirates. If you can find a big dog who answers to the name, Nana, bring her along. Good luck. Have fun and a safe trip. Take a lot of pictures, please. 🤗 Also, bring snacks.

              1. Great idea and Holly always knows what she’s talking about, so take her advice seriously. Rum, for sure. I agree the pirates will love it. And if you do see Peter, give him a handful of self-addressed, stamped postcards. That way you have a better chance of hearing from him. If you stick by him Tink may show herself, depending on her mood. I mean, you know how she gets around him. It never hurts to bring chocolate along. Dress in layers, you never know what the weather will be like and be sure to take good notes to go with the pictures. This is a very exciting undertaking. I don’t know anyone who has tried to go there. I’m sure a movie will be made and you’ll have to write at least ONE book on your experience, so keep that in mind as you take pictures. Also, remember that fairies are a tricky bunch. Do not accept any gifts, not matter how big or small. Make no promises and do not eat or drink anything they offer…ever. If Nana goes with you, bring toys.
