Whispers of the Desert 7

An – Nisā

Lust and the the temptation of dreams

***

After dinner, the family broke up into their night chores. Amir’s duty was to his studies. A small lamp offered enough light to read the pages of his holy book.

For a long time, he had observed that the book was full of reprimands and punishments directed at unbelievers and those who, despite believing, failed to adhere to its countless rules of conduct and worship.

The memory of the Bowl of Stones flashed across the pages and faded to the image of the young woman and his strange feelings for her.

Was his sin from lust?” The whisper barely found his ears as he turned to the book of An-Nisā, The Woman, and read it, hoping he would find some revelation. In verse twenty-seven, he read, ‘Allah doth wish to turn to you, but the wish of those who follow their lusts is that ye should turn away from him – far, far away.’

Anguish distorted Amir’s face. His eyes only saw when he cast the stone at the widow in the pit of rocks. Again, he heard the hollow sound reverberating from the quarry as he and others struck her with the force of their ignorance and fear of the judges.

The judges condemned her as a whore who broke her covenant with God to remain chaste. Yet, the men behind him had whispered the actual crime was the lust of the fat judge who promised him death for his weakness.

Why do I feel such a strong connection between the widow and the girl in the alley? Amir was determined to find out. It was a sign, a revelation that opened a path to his repentance and Allah’s forgiveness. Maybe this woman in the colorful dress would help him escape the Red Scorpion Judge’s promise to martyr him in a cause Amir did not believe in.

  1. So glad he is looking for answers and exploring why. It’s mother nature, it’s how we use it is who our makers judge us. God only knows I’ve sinned many times but he knows I’m human. I couldn’t follow the book as it was written but I wasn’t into all the rules and knew God would forgive me if I felt contrition. Good chapter. If I don’t talk to you again, have a blessed Christmas. How is Tigeer Mom? Are the kids heling you out? Hugs.

    1. Thank you M. The truth is, we don’t need to complicate things but we humans love to overthink our lives. And a merry Christmas to you as well. The kids are busy being wonderful blessings upon the earth and Tiger Mom remains unaware of the people and world around her. That might be a blessing too.

      1. I’ve been there and it’s a tough place to be. It’s exhausting and so sad at the same time. I starting grieving my Granny when she could no longer remember, she wasn’t herself anymore. You have the extra pain of being her husband and caregiver, take good care of yourself. Hugs.

        1. Age related dementia runs in my family. It got my paternal grandmother, both of my maternal grandparents, and my father. I fully expect it to get me too. The secret is to teach my kids to rush me into a nursing home at the last minute and convince me I’m the CEO so I’ll feel obligated to stay. I’ve decided to let TM run wild. She attacks me a lot less when she gets her way.

  2. Such complicated and harsh conditions and guidelines for a young boy. Of course he is confused , naturally he is attracted to the young woman yet he is torn by feelings of guilt and shamed by the stoning of the older woman in the quarry and the teachings he is bound by.
A great tale Dan, it will be interesting to read just how and if he can determine what is right based on these strict teachings.
    well done 👍

    1. Amir is conflicted much so as you pointed out, Rene. Amir is not given the tools to deal with complicated issues by his family or society. He is urged to conform and to be a future Holy leader, which is the dream of many parents in religious societies. Yet, all around he sees and is thrust into situations that are outside the covenants and laws of his beliefs or his parent’s strict guidelines. It’s a very real challenge for millions of young people across the developed and undeveloped world. Choices and decisions have lifelong consequences and Amir is slowly being led to his ultimatum. Stay tuned. The pressure never relents, it only grows in intensity.

      1. It is a challenge and so unfair. I will never understand why many adolescents in the free ( right!) world are held to strict religious structures and end up completely screwed up. Some learning to hate and end up committing crimes or just leaving home and living on the street until something terrible happens to them. I’m agin it!
I like your very sensual pic but that woman looks like she’s confused and has spent too many hours in the gym.
Loving this story Dan. Actually it reminds me of the religious radicals out there.

        1. Thank you Rene, you get to the heart of the matter quickly. I’ve seen good kids go bad when they are confronted with peer pressure that as the quote from the Koran reads, leads them far far away from a moral standard. Most young people haven’t learned how to focus their ability to commit to positive goals and the pressure to get there is immense. Enter the temptation to overindulge in destructive behaviors that ultimately can last a life time. You are right. The homeless and drug addicted, most with some form of mental illness, aren’t old bums too decrepit to ride the trains anymore. They are young adults, forever lost. This is part of the message in the story. LOL! Yes, the AI that drew that picture is definitely confused about femininity. She looks much bigger, and stronger than the male counterpart. I let it go up because, I secretly like to make fun of AI’s and their fumbling efforts to make us humans look silly. To be honest, I want to be respectful of Islam and other world religions. It isn’t so much the teachings of religion that are wrong, but the inability of humanity to overcome our 500 million year old DNA imposed natural instincts for survival that put us on the same level as all predatory animals. When we add sexual predation to the mix, it’s no wonder these instincts driving cunning minds have led us to this point where many are beginning to see the potential for a human extinction event. The question the story will answer is if our religion, social, and civil standards no longer influence positive behaviors, who or what will provide that guiding light for future generations? As always, thank you, Rene, for your deep insights and beautiful, thought provoking comments. You are a bright light in a dim world.

          1. Thank you so much Dan, you’ve given us a lot to think about and wonder how this young man will maneuver his world of natural instincts and the indoctrination of his religion and harsh society. It’s going to be interesting without a doubt. ❤

            1. Yes indeedy 😉 Conflict in a story is what makes the story. Amir is the subject of internal and external conflict coming from multiple directions like we face today. How he resolves this is exactly the same way Renate and David solve their problems. He is not ready yet. He will soon learn. 🤗🕊️

I can even make a battery to power the lights with just a few wires and sea water. If one is surviving, it’s ridiculous to include discomfort in such an effort. 🥂🧉🕯️🛖💃🕺🌴

  3. Funny how AI does the same thing for Arabs the great western painters have done for 2,000 years🤣 Back during the Gulf War part f the cadre I worked with were deep south rednecks, and in a meeting this guy says “If Jesus was here he’d go over there and kick some ass.” And I said, “What, the blue eyed dishwater blond of Sunday School flyers is gonna do what? Catch a red-eye outta Savanah, land in Kuwait and he and Moses will turn all that sand into glass?” Religious marketing. Fuck. Me. And she needs to ditch the Dwayne Johnson pecs for something more fetching. Unless this a woke non gender specific pronoun free temptation tome then ignore me.

    1. Waaa haaaa haaaa! I was aghast at the AI’s attempts at art. The instruction was to draw a female representative of lust in a Southwest Asian theme and I get a female that looks more masculine than the man being tempted. I decided to leave it as is because it is proof AI art is confused by current gender politics. What I was attempting was a medieval style painting of the Nightmare or succubus. What I got was more than I bargained for. But hey, isn’t fiction supposed to be entertaining? All of WP’s AI art is full of surprises such as the Fritos for a traditional sheepherder’s meal. I’m feeling a bit Monty Pythonish here.

  4. Excellent example of inner conflict within Amir.

Interesting that the book about The Woman within his holy book was called An-Nisa.

Reminds me in phonetic pronunciation of Anais Nin the woman writer of short stories, poems and erotica whose power of the written word is enough to turn any man on.

    1. Thank you Chris. Amir is indeed conflicted and it will continue to grow within him until his inner Pan Goatee pops out of his behind and goes astral laser on the iniquitous Red Scorpians. A very interesting observation between An-Nisā and Anais Nin. While the Surah An-Nisā has broader implications than femininity, Nisa is the Arabic name for Women. But, as you wrote, Amir will face carnal temptations, which are always far stronger than the will to maintain any moral code given us by God. Eve and Anais Nin, by their very nature, led men astray like Bathsheba and Cleopatra. While historically, we assign the nom de Guerre, Jezebel to our temptress, it is truly the nature of men to do anything, no matter how wicked, to possess the pleasure of her company.

  5. At first I read  Anais Nin.

    Then I realized An-Nisā.

I have a Muslim friend. She is very outspoken, gets into a lot of trouble with her Imam.

She fights for women’s rights within her religion.

She says she wants to put the “fun” in fundamentalism.

Still, when I read this, or watch the news, I see no fun, just mentalism.

It’s interesting to see where you are going. ? .?

    1. Thank you Resa, I love your perspective on this. While I have nothing but respect for religions of people, I see how human nature always corrupts the divine scriptures. This story introduces us more to the culture context of humanity than the actual teachings of Islam. Within that environment is the complicated conflict inside Amir as he tries to follow a traditional role and the drastic changes going on all around him. We are in the normal phase. Hell is loosed later and we’ll see how Amir resolves his many internal conflicts. I’ve lived in Muslim countries where being another religion was life threatening; however, I found the people who led a normal life were also beautiful souls. The women do have a special kind of power they exercise with adept social and private lives. Like in all societies, the men with predatory natures and poor upbringing, pose an existential threat to their society and women in particular. In all cases, religion has nothing to do with this horrendous social sickness, it can be a mask or disguise for the predator to use, but it is the evil nature of man behind every mask that perpetrates this evil on the earth. I think women’s rights and fair treatment is a subject everyone’s familiar with, but in 14,000 years since we left the comfort of caves, we have progressed poorly and now seem to digress. WE all know what must be done, we just can’t seem to do it in an equitable and lasting way.

      1. I agree about the evil existing in the minds and hearts of mankind, and the masks predators wear.
I also see that one of those masks is religion.
That is not to say that all religious people are wearing a mask.
It is to reiterate your assertion that “human nature always corrupts the divine scriptures”.

My issue with religions is the hypocrisy. Perhaps at one time the teachings shepherded humanity to a better way. Now, they just seem to keep masses ignorant and divide.

I look forward to your next instalment!

        1. I agree. The problem isn’t the fact that humans have always sought a divine guidance or that the largest majority of the world’s population subscribe to spiritual pursuits, it’s the horrible hypocrisy that teaches love, faith, hope, redemption, charity, and an everlasting life beyond physical existence and betrays it all for the pursuit of wealth and power. At the personal level, the pursuit of pleasure easily overrides any form of devotion that involves selflessness. That is pretty much what this story is all about. A book you may appreciate is Karen Armstrong’s, ‘A History of God,’ where she lays it all bare how humanity killed God (and the benevolence of spirituality). The book was published in 1994 and captures our today 30 years later and our future as civilizations transition into manifesting individual realities often without a moral compass. It’s not bad, it’s just hard for me to understand how this will improve our human nature. But, Amir is going to solve this, soon, I hope.
