The Island 19

Codex from the Order of the Rose

The Rose does not glow for power or warning.
It glows to reveal the patterns that connect earth and soul.

Renate woke before sunrise, She was soaked in perspiration. After slipping out of bed to avoid waking David, she poured herself a mug of water and soaked a rag. She sat for a few minutes sipping the water and wiping her forehead with the damp rag. Feeling light headed, she crawled back into bed and fell into a deep sleep.

Later, they both got up and ate breakfast and packed some things they thought they might need. Silence was thick in the hut. Each was lost in their thoughts as they contemplated what awaited them.

They walked in silence toward the forest, a subtle tension had grown in Renate’s stomach during the night. She kept her hand near her shoulder, not touching the rose‑vine but acutely aware of it, the way one remains aware of a heartbeat after running.

David moved beside her without speaking; he felt the same steady tension, a heavy feeling drawing them forward into the unknown.

At the narrow trail Renate paused.
“It’s stronger today.”

“I feel it too.”

The forest thickened around them as they followed the path. Cooler air gathered beneath the canopy, and the trees seemed to lean inward as if listening. Renate’s steps slowed when the rise of stone appeared ahead. The cave mouth emerged between the trunks, mysterious, and waiting.

David paused next to Renate. “It hasn’t changed.”

Touching her rose-vine tattoo she replied. “No, but I have.”

The entrance carvings seemed sharper than before, spirals cut deeper into the stone. When she touched the surface, warmth spread beneath her palm and the rose‑vine glowed in a soft pulse that traveled down her arm.

David noticed. “Renate, the rose is lighting up.”

“It’s all right,” she said. “It’s responding.”

“To what?”

“The memory of those who carved this.”

The glow brightened, and the stone warmed further, as if answering her touch. David stepped closer, concern tightening his voice.

“You don’t have to go in.”

Perspiration gathered on her pale face. “I know,” she said gently. “But I think I’m meant to.”

He swallowed. “Then I’m with you.”

Renate’s small, grateful smile preceded her step across the threshold. The moment her foot touched the cave floor, the vine pulsed again, stronger. A cool breath of air brushed her face, and David felt it too.

“It seems to welcome us,” he said.

“Yes,” she whispered. “It knows we are here.”

Light from the entrance reached the stele inside, illuminating carved lines that resembled verses. The symbols glowed faintly, stirred by their presence. Renate stopped before it.

“This is what I painted.”

“The same patterns,” David agreed.

She lifted her hand. The vine brightened, spreading light across her shoulder and down her arm. When her fingers touched the stele, the glow steadied.

“Renate, what’s happening?” David asked.

“I’m hearing it.”

“Hearing what?”

“The island.”

A chill moved through him. “What is it saying?”

“That the rose-vine was here before,” she said softly.

“Renate. We were here before.”

“Not us, exactly. Not in this life. But the island remembers the Order, the Cathedral, the vine.”

“And you?”

“It seems to recognize me too.”

The glow beneath her skin pulsed in a slow, rhythmic beat. Outside, birds gathered again, their calls echoing faintly through the trees.

“David,” she said, “this is only the beginning.”

He took her hand. “Then we face it together.”

The cave breathed around them, cool, ancient, patient, and the island opened its history as a carving in stone, revealing a symbiotic life between people and place, etched into the geometric patterns on the stele.

  1. So the cave has now awakened and so has Renate’s rose-vine.

  2. I can sense the impulse to both enter the cave and run away. Renate is called to enter and David must follow. Chilling and intriguing and beautifully entertaining. Well done , Dan. I am captivated by your story.

    1. Thank you, Rene. It means a lot that you enjoy this slight deviation from our more peaceful hammock focused discussions. A little excitement and intrigue will give Renate and David a powerful thirst for some good ole Pear Wine and introspection under the palm trees.

        1. You are a dear friend, Rene. Even tho my wild commentary can be a bit much, even for me, you’ve weathered my storm for 10 years now. Can you believe that? We both should be insane by now. Never underestimate a Pisces and never argue with two Pisces. We possess Neptune’s Trident and we know how to use it. I think the Island is preparing R & D for the trip to Niburu. 😳🫢

You’re the best my friend. Thanks for putting up with me.

You’re writing around the story with a sophomoric relationship word waster. As for perspiration – cows sweat, men perspire and women glow. Part of me may be in a rose, one day… and/or a toad waiting near a cave, or maybe I’ll be stardust.

    I’m good with it all.

    1. Love this comment Resa, This is really what the oddity is all about. Renate and David are seeking refuge from the Orange madness that has gripped the world. But before they can really survive removed from the invasive habit of convenience and a high price, they must reconnect themselves to the natural world and cosmic unity and rhythms personified in the Island story. I’ve always found it odd that humans became the only unnatural entity in the entire known universe and especially our natural world. We are slowly seeing that we are not the supreme being, but more the supreme folly.

Orange madness… I was about to laugh but, Oh ’tis true ’tis true!
One could say I have found my current island in the arts.
I see the arts as that island within.

As of about 12, when I realized I was actually eating a piece of a creature’s leg, I knew we we not supreme.
Supreme folly sounds about right to me.

        1. I agree. The inner island is where I spend most of my time now. I do minimize my consumption of creatures. I prefer to feed them and let them run amok. They don’t need me to sort them out. However, once I learned plants were sentient beings too, I began to fret about that. My clear conscious options were running out. When I lived in the Middle East and North Africa, I found the majority of humans lived on a very limited diet. The enslaved people there worked incredibly hard in unbelievable harsh conditions. They lived primarily on rice, cooking oil, and a few spices with mostly brewed tea to drink. They were all about 2% body fat and could sustain physical activity that would kill 90% of the western population in one day. I began to question my concepts of food and nutrition. Somewhere between our excess and their starvation is a happy medium. I hope to find that medium someday.

            I am veggie… no flesh since 17 yrs.old
Lol… I went down to 89 lbs (5’6″) in my early 20’s. My knees were the biggest part of my legs. I was afraid to eat anything.

Yes, I had to get over the reality of the food chain.(still freaks me out) For something to live, something must die.

I lived in South America for over a year in my 20’s. A very different reality from where you went.
It was the only time I saw starvation. It was in the altiplano of Peru & Bolivia. People were living on 20-30 varieties of potato, pigs which ate … omg… and were clubbed to death with rocks, children with huge stomachs & their spines and ribs protruding.

How spoiled are we that we have the option to design a diet and have control of our health and bodies…to a point?

            My lucky stars are innumerable.

            1. Ahh, I too was on the thin side for many years. Now, if I didn’t need nutrition to stay alive, I’d stop that bad habit. Your experience in SA is a good example of how our luxurious western lifestyle seems out of touch with the rest of the world. We are all going to be challenged far beyond our abilities in the near future and only those who have nothing to lose will have the right mindset to overcome the challenges.

  7. Resa’s comment on potatoes: the Andes have dozens of potato species. There are… 30 maybe in Colombia?

Sadly the European explorers seem to have exported the most tasteless… Ah! Well!

(Are there potatoes on the island?)

    1. That’s fascinating about potatoes as a prime source of food. It does seem that starches were the most preferred food around the world. The US does seem to be obsessed with tasteless potatoes poor in texture and nutrition. We compensate by adding butter, sour cream, chives, bacon, and lots of salt. We call them heart stoppers.

      1. Haha! I discovered your potatoes in the South. Not too bad actually. (Bacon is all right in reasonable quantities though…)
