The Island 27

The Stone’s Patience

Stones teach the long lesson. They remember the river even after the river has long abandoned them. Hold one, and you hold the memory of infinite time in your hand.

While Renate queries the Island’s being, David wonders what the hell happened to Renate’s shoes and socks and why does her Khakis look like mom jeans full of bootie. He wisely keeps his mouth shut while he thinks of a way to get out of the cave without a ruckus. Totally risqué AI image by MS CoPLot. The author disavows any responsibility.

Light brightened until the walls dissolved into a soft field of radiance. Warmth rose through Renate’s arm and into her chest. The vine’s pulse steadied, then opened like a door. A vast stillness formed around her.

She stood in a space without horizon. The ground shimmered like water yet held her weight. The air carried no scent, the first breath of a world that had not yet chosen its shape.

A figure emerged from the brightness.

Its outline shifted with each step, formed from light rather than flesh. A calm presence radiated from it, the presence of something that had watched many lives pass through its awareness. Renate felt no fear, only recognition.

The figure stopped a few paces away. Its voice arrived without sound, carried through the warmth surrounding them.

“You have entered the place where memory gathers.”

Renate lifted her hand. The vine glowed in answer.

“What are you?”

Its form rippled. “I am the echo of every life that shaped this island. I am the pattern that remains when time moves on.”

“Why show yourself to me?”

“Because you listened. Many walked these chambers. Few understood that the island speaks through silence.”

Warmth deepened around her. The figure’s presence pressed gently against her thoughts, like a tide touching the shore.

“Why does the island remember us?”

“Memory is how a place survives its own age. Each bearer leaves a trace. Each trace becomes part of the next. You carry the newest thread in a long weave.”

Renate looked at the vine on her arm. “Is this thread mine?”

“It belongs to you. It belongs to those who came before. It will belong to those who come after. The vine is a bridge. It carries what cannot be spoken.”

She felt a presence behind her. David’s image flickered at the edge of her awareness, steady and grounding.

“What does the island want from us?” she asked.

The figure dimmed slightly, as if considering.

“The island seeks continuity. A mind that can hold its memory without fear. A bearer who understands that memory is a living force.”

“What must I do?”

The figure raised its hand. Light shifted into a spiral matching the patterns of constellations found throughout the cave.

“Walk the deeper passage. The island will show you what it has guarded. When you understand the final pattern, the island will rest.”

“Will I see you again?”

“You will see me wherever memory gathers. I am the shape of what remains.”

Light folded inward.

The chamber returned.
Stone returned.
David stood beside her.

“The island spoke,” she said.

“What did it tell you?”

Renate looked toward the exit as it slowly emerged from the shadows.

“It told me the island is ready for us to fully commit to it. To become part of the island and its history just like the others did that left us so many supplies.” The chamber returned to darkness. The force that lit it was gone and they felt alone as total darkness enveloped them.

Renate held to David, her head heavy. Complete darkness and total silence surrounded them.

“I feel exhausted and out of breath. It feels like we’ve been in here for days.”

David held Renate as he searched for his light in his cargo pocket.

“Let’s go,” he said.

Renate looked around. “Where the hell are my shoes and socks?”

David scanned the area with the light. “Never trust an AI to remember your shoes when it creates your scene.”

“Gods below, that’s probably why my butt looks so big in these khakis.”

“I kinda like your butt.” David smirked and gave Renate a playful pat on her AI enhanced bootie. Renate, far from amused, grabbed David’s arm and issued a curt command. “Let’s get both our butts out of here before CoPlot screws up our exit.”

The light from the searching flashlight faded down the throat of the exit.

“Stop that Mr. Wait until we’re out of here.”

  1. Glad to see you’ve incorporated AI missteps into your dialogue in this scene.
I remember once when you read one of my blog posts, you mistook the word “tentacles” for testicles.
Now I’m afraid I’ve done the same in reading this post of yours.
That line “Renate, far from amused, grabbed David’s arm and issued a curt command” I read as “Renate, far from amused, grabbed David’s arm and issued a cunt command”.
And I thought, wow, Daniel is really being risqué in his writing now.
I wondered what in God’s name a cunt command was.
But I imagine from the term “cunt command” it is obviously a command that a woman expects to be taken very seriously.
Until I suddenly realized the term was “curt command” and not what I originally read it as.
I guess you can be thankful that you never typed the word “curt command” in your CoPilot AI prompt.
Otherwise Renate would probably have more to complain about than missing shoes and socks.
