Love and Trust

Can there be love without trust? When I examine love between couples, it seems to me trust is the glue that binds the weak force of love together. I consider trust one of the most important aspects of lasting love. From trust we manifest acceptance, reliability, and a sense of safety. You have my back.

We need words to build our trust but words without deeds to back them up are eventually hollow and breed suspicion. We must do what we say we will do. As our trust develops we experience empathy, compassion, and to some extent, altruism. These are foundational to real love.

But, beware. Trust when viewed from a self serving perspective becomes a prison warden that enslaves the other and eventually kills the spark of life and one finds themselves abandoned by the one most trusted and this act of betrayal leaves us scarred for life. When we trust someone and have expectations that they will meet our criteria to earn our trust we are asking them to become like us, abandoning themselves to our demands.

Trust must be earned. Yet to truly trust someone, we must first accept them as they are and allow them to pursue their dreams and the shared dreams built together over time. If we can’t do this, perhaps the person is not the right one to help bring us contentment, purpose, and life meaning. Real trust takes time and it is time well spent.

  1. Love without trust is tragic. Best to not break trust in the first place. I think the most challenging love is within families (specifically siblings), lots of potential for misunderstandings.

This is true, Judy. Excellent comment, if you have one’s trust, it should be treated with the utmost respect. Certainly families experience a lot of turmoil as members assert themselves and others see things differently. Trust can be very fragile in families if it exists at all. This is another place where feelings of betrayal can last a long time.

      1. Friends and lovers are chosen by us but families are chosen by God :). I suppose to to stretch our ability for compassion and mental growth, very challenging kind of love! Betrayals and rivalries do sometimes last a lifetime even when they seemed to have resolved, old hurts linger.

It seems this is the default human condition. If we focus on living in the light of life, we can manage these challenges better, but it doesn’t come with an easy button.

Agreed! I always thought the best life was to step away from balance and tip the scales with a little risk for the greater experience.

  2. Trust is something that’s, so easily lost, and when our trusts that’s given to someone else gets broken, we started to, distrust our own selves, which makes it impossible for us, to trust, anybody else again, beacuse we were hurt, and we started, distrusting our own, judgments, and, before we can trust anybody else outside of us, we must, regain, reestablished the trust we’d lost, from trusting someone else with our whole heart and soul, previously.

Excellent comment. Thank you. This is probably the most important aspect of trust. It must start from within before it can be extended to others.

  3. A lovely narrative on the subject of trust. No one is perfect and trust can be put in question or shattered, still I feel if love survives there should be second opportunities to rebuild trust. That is a tall order and hard work but trust can be rebuilt over time if one sincerely feels a relationship is so important in their lives a second chance is worthwhile. Unfortunately, broken trust , even if forgiven, is never forgotten.

You are so right, Rene. This is why, for me, trust is one of the foundational aspects of sustaining a positive connection to family, friends, associates, and especially our life partner. Because we are human, we will fail this test unless we can reach and hold a higher and more noble self, or our memory is short.

    Love cannot exist without trust.

Which probably explains why most politicians find themselves unloved.

Thank you Chris. I’m trying to spread a little old fashion 🕉. I do think a lot of the chaos we see happening is because trust has been destroyed. The whole planet has suddenly reverted back to the Terrible Twos of toddler life. Hmmmm. I see a conspiracy theory emerging in the adult diaper industry.

I did not buy any tickets and in fact removed all televisions from my house just in case they tried to sneak something in on me with the evening news. I’ve turned on and dropped out as the 70’s hippies used to say. I’m feeding the Void in my head with books from the classics.

It’s all just too sad to take anymore. I love reading the classics instead. No foul gratuitous language and every romance is done in good taste. Even the evil antagonists are never droll idiots.

I’m a firm believer that mortal pain is the best teacher for the lower forms of human consciousness. And death by stupidity is a necessary means of keeping the gene pool clean. We should not interfere with this natural process.

I agree. The blog post is the fertilizer of expanded thoughts presented in often humorous ways. I have enjoyed testing ChatGPT and find it quite shy in answering questions. It seems to be programmed with a politically correct algorithm.

Yep, you got it. And it’s scraping all of the bs on the internet and finding the median solution. So, what ChatGPT does is concentrate the propaganda into a single source. So, this makes the AI an excellent bullsh*ter. Still, BS for writers of fiction isn’t a bad thing when suspending reality is the intent.

This is a quotable quote for the day. Life was fun and most people had dignity and grace in their public decorum. Politics was practiced in the home, not on the streets or in schools and every institution of human civilization where violence is perpetrated on anyone with morals, ethics, values, and integrity.
