The Island 22

The First Remembering

Memory begins as a tremor in the soul.
It stirs before thought, before language, before desire. Those who follow its vibration learn the shape of their own beginnings.

They stood before a wall of constellations, the lines glowing faintly in their lights. Renate stepped closer, her hand hovering above the carvings. David watched her carefully.

β€œDo you feel anything?”

β€œYes. It’s waiting.”

β€œFor what?”

She didn’t answer. Her palm pressed lightly to the stone.

The chamber responded.

A pulse moved through the walls, sound, a movement, something deeper, like memory stirring in the back of the mind. The carvings brightened, lines connecting with slow, deliberate illumination.

β€œRenate,” David said, stepping back.

β€œIt’s all right. It won’t harm me.”

The glow beneath her skin intensified, tracing the vine’s leaves and the small rosebud near her shoulder. Light rose from the walls like dawn breaking.

β€œDavid, I can hear it,” she said.

β€œWhat do you hear?”

β€œThe drawings aren’t a map. They are a record.”

β€œA record of what?”

β€œEvery awakening for every bearer who came here.”

β€œAll of them?” he asked.

β€œYes. The monks weren’t the beginning. They were the last ones who kept the record.”

The chamber pulsed again, matching the rhythm beneath her skin.

β€œThis place was made for the bearers.”

β€œFor you,” David whispered.

β€œFor us. The bearers were never alone. They always had someone who could remain vigilant while the bearer interacted with the spirit of the cave.”

β€œAnd what is it showing us now?”

She stepped back. The glow dimmed slightly, but the chamber remained lit by a steady light.

β€œIt’s showing us the purpose for our coming here.”

He waited.

Renate pointed to a constellation glowing brighter than the rest, a branching pattern curving inward like a rose opening.

β€œThis is the island.”

β€œThe island is a constellation?”

β€œNo. The constellation is a symbol of the island, a way of marking it, a way of finding it and all those places connected to it.”

β€œWhat is it telling you about the purpose?”

β€œIt represents convergence. The moment when the bearer and the island awaken together.”

β€œIs that what’s happening now?”

β€œYes.”

The chamber brightened again.

β€œThis chamber was built to prepare us,” she said.

β€œFor what, for the convergence?”

β€œFor the chamber below.”

β€œThere’s another one?”

β€œYes. The deepest one. The one that holds the island’s origins.”

A soft downward pull moved through the air, as if the cave itself pointed the way.

β€œDavid,” she said, taking his hand, β€œthe island is ready.”

He squeezed her hand. β€œAre you ready to go further?”

The chamber pulsed once more, a soft, approving glow, and the path downward revealed itself.

  2. Okay, heading down to the deepest chamber with Renate and David.

The way to the island, the way to the cave, the way to the deepest cave…The Way.

    1. The patterns the AI drew for your picture look like patterns that were appearing in various places – Roswell New Mexico, farmers’ fields in Idaho and in constellation charts on NASA monitors that appeared in an old TV series about UFOs πŸ›Έ and aliens called Dark Skies that I watched on YouTube last night.
I wonder if the Island was a fan of that show.

I wonder what else the island has in its memories?

And what is this convergence that’s unfolding?

      1. I think it’s all related kinda like finding Pyramids all over the planet and wondering how all those ancient people got the same idea without knowing each other. They found a 12,000 year old metal sphere that defies gravity in South America and ancient Hebrew tablets in South America. I bet something is going on there.

That’s very interesting about the 12,000 year old metal sphere that defies gravity in South America as well as ancient Hebrew texts.

    1. Thank you so much, Rene, You said it perfectly. A journey into the past that leads to the future for Renate and David. Everything they express is true scientific discovery with philosophical underpinnings in a fictional world. Naturally, instead of just stating their discovery in plain terms, I’ve given it all a little twist. I love epigraphs, the opening statements. I got the idea from reading Frank Herbert’s Dune. I always open with a book quote but now I decided to create quotes from the Order of the Rose Codex. I give those a little twist too. Instead of Dune’s Bene Geserit Order, we have the mysterious monks from the Order of the Rose. Virtually everything in the story is symbolic but I don’t give that away. I let readers interpret what they wish. Some of the comments show people are zeroing in on the meaning behind the symbols. Dan Simons, who wrote The Hyperion Cantos used this technique to great effect.

  6. Hello… test checking!

Dan, it has gotten to the point where I will not comment on a blog, unless I can get in touch with the person.

It all stemmed from a Spam nightmare about 7 years ago. It took WP & akismet a couple of months to straighten things out. In the end they told me to keep an eye on my comments on other blogs.

If I did not see my comment, I was to contact the blog owner and have them fish me out of Spam, or the nightmare would start all over.

SIGH! Thank you for your patience!

    1. I think due to my knowing all my readers, spammers don’t stop by very often. However, it appears some of your comments did wind up in the unapproved section for some reason. That happens regularly to people already auto approved and I have to go in and rescue them from the dark and dank dungeons of WP. You should be good now. I hope. Oh, well, it is WP after all. We never know when it will unfriend us.
