The Island 29

The Mirror of Living Things

Nature reflects the shape of the one who observes it. Look with fear, and the world becomes a place of shadows. Look with clarity, and the world reveals its hidden order.

Renate now has her belt in her pants and she has changed her shirt and pants. However David is looking older, a bit more gray. And, he is still wearing the same shirt and pants he was a month ago. CoPlot seems to be showing us how time passes differently for each of us. AI generated image without using a single brain cell from the author.

Three weeks passed before Renate felt steady again. The fever and confusion it caused had gradually left her. Her strength returned, yet something inside her remained unsettled.
David saw it each morning in the way she paused before speaking, as if listening for an echo that never arrived.

On the morning of the fourth week, they sat together at breakfast outside the hut. The air was cool. The sea was calm. Renate held her cup with both hands, staring into the steam rising from her coffee like a genie from his lamp.

“I want to go back to the cave,” she said.

David set down his spoon. He studied her face. Her eyes held a quiet urgency that troubled him.

“You need closure,” he said. “I understand that. I also worry about how much space the cave has taken in your thoughts.”

Renate looked toward the forest.
“I need to see it again. I need to know what was real.”

David nodded slowly.
“Okay. But we take our time.”

They packed water and flashlights. They walked the familiar path through the forest, moving with deliberate steps. The trees whispered in the morning breeze. The earth felt steady beneath their feet.

Renate kept her gaze forward.
David watched her from the corner of his eye. He hoped the walk would ease the tension in her shoulders, yet it remained.

When they reached the cave entrance, the world felt unchanged. The same moss on the stones. The same cool breath of air drifting from the darkness. The same silence.

Renate stood still for a long moment.
“It looks exactly as it did before.”

David clicked on his flashlight.
“Let us see what waits inside.”

They entered the cave slowly. The beam of light moved across the walls, revealing the familiar carvings and rough stone. Renate traced her fingers along the surface of the stele, searching for any sign of the visions she remembered.

Nothing answered her touch, shimmered, or breathed. The rose-vine remained quiet.

They moved deeper. The air grew cooler. The silence grew heavier. Then the path ended.

A wall of fallen rock blocked the passage. Large stones lay piled in a way that suggested age. Green moss clung to their surfaces. Rubble from the cave in lay thick and undisturbed.

David crouched and examined the ground.
“There are no footprints here except ours.”

Renate stared at the cave‑in. Her breath caught in her throat.

“This cannot be right,” she whispered. “We walked through here. We stood in the chamber. We saw the pool and the wall of constellations.”

David rose and placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Renate. These rocks have been here a long time.”

She stepped closer to the cave‑in. Her fingers brushed the moss. The cool dampness clung to her skin.

Her voice trembled.
“Then everything I saw was a dream.”

David did not answer.
He watched her face as the truth settled into her. Her shoulders lowered. Her breath grew shallow.

Renate closed her eyes. The memory of the chamber flickered behind them. The figure of light, spirals carved and glowing in the stone walls. Warm air pulsing like breath around them. The voice.

All of it felt distant now. Thin and fragile.

She opened her eyes again. “We should go.”

They walked back through the cave in silence. The forest greeted them with warm light as they stepped outside.

David took a deep breath and turned to her with a gentle smile.
“Today we build a bathroom. A real one. With walls and a door and a walkway of stone. We’ll have a lavatory, throne, mirror, and shower. Maybe even a sauna. You deserve some comfort after this expereince with the cave.”

Renate blinked, surprised.
“A bathroom.”

“Yes,” he said. “A fully functioning bathroom. The island will provide the materials. We only need to gather them.”

A small laugh escaped her. It was the first sound of ease he had heard from her in days.

“David, It just dawned on me this is what the dream was all about. The island will provide everything we need. All we have to do is build it.”

* * *

They spent the rest of the day gathering wood from the forest and their leftover pile, smooth stones from the stream, and broad leaves from the forest. They worked side by side, planning the layout of the new hut and the path that would lead to it.

As they worked, they spoke of dreams. They spoke of symbols. They spoke of the way the mind creates meaning even when the body is weak.

Renate listened to David’s thoughts with quiet attention.
She offered her own reflections in return.

“Dreams speak in images,” she said. “They show what we fear. They show what we desire. They show what we carry without knowing.”

David nodded.
“And sometimes they show what we need to let go of.”

Renate paused with a stone in her hand. She looked toward the forest, toward the hidden cave.

“I wanted the cave to speak,” she said. “I wanted the island to reveal itself. I wanted to believe the fever had opened a door.”

David placed his hand on her back to comfort her.
“Dreams can feel like doors. That does not make them less meaningful.”

Renate breathed in the warm air. The scent of the sea drifted across the clearing. Waves coming ashore softened the edges of her thoughts.

She set the stone in place along the path. The walkway began to take shape.

As the sun lowered toward the horizon, the bathroom hut stood half finished. Renate stepped back and smiled.

“It feels good to build something real,” she said.

David smiled with her. “It does. Especially something we desire, we need, and serves a useful purpose.”

Renate looked once more toward the forest. The cave remained hidden behind the trees. Its silence no longer pressed against her mind.

She turned back to the hut. The day’s work had steadied her. The dream still lingered, but its weight had changed. She felt lighter and the island felt quiet.

“You know what, David?”

David turned to study the mirth in Renate’s eyes. “What, dear?”

“When we finish the privy, we should have a luau.”

“That is a fine idea, Babe. Let’s do it!”

    1. The desire to live off the grid has become for many a desire to live well without taxes, fees, rules, and government oversight. It’s not primitive life we seek, but an escape from the worldliness of the human species packed in close proximity of each other. Apparently, like rodents, we really stink up the place when we get overcrowded.

        1. Even new deodorants aren’t masking the stench of dense civilizations. Pootins effort to depopulate Ukraine has backfired. Russia is depopulating its male population in the effort. All the experts that work to remove invasive species know you have to go after the sow and once they are gone the boars will eliminate each other.

            1. Here in the New Knighted States of ‘Merica, we have self elimination going full speed ahead so no entity for population reduction need bother themselves with us. WE’ll get the depopulation going without delay.

              1. America seems to be depopulating itself very well.
Save for the large number of Muslim immigrants coming into the country.
I notice no American leader has taken notice of the fact how well large scale Muslim immigration has worked out for the United Kingdom 🇬🇧

    1. The dream is still a mystery, but you express wonderfully, what a soul searching transformation can do for us. Is this what so many are missing?

      1. Many are missing the stability of , though flawed, a democracy that once assured it would allow us the freedoms and rights promised that is now under attack as we struggle, seemingly helpless to stop the onslaught.
Like Renate and David many are searching for a way out…with the wherewithal they are able to leave in search of promised equality and freedom. It seems the world of nations is in danger of falling under the influence of lies and hatred.
It’s a dream to read of this island of serenity, peace, and harmony with nature and life that knows no boundaries or threats.
Thank you for this beautiful escape . 🏝️

  4. I like this episode, Dan.

You took the mysticism out of a faux reality and replaced it with a mystic reality. Beautiful!

So, Renate.. Coplot seems to have changed her face?

    Thank you! (You… not Coplot)
