The Unfinished Republic

Number 2 in a series of Civic briefings prepared for high school students, their parents, and educators in my district.

“A nation is born not from certainty but from the audacity to name its ideals. America began as a declaration against the limits of the world— and against the limits within ourselves.”

FOR A STRONGER TOMORROW

Part of my 45 year career in the government was as an educator. I trained junior members to become senior leaders and taught several skills and trades in measurement sciences research and development of advanced technologies to include AI. Teaching was a secondary duty to my daily tasks, but it was the most important thing I did in my opinion.

I began as a greenhorn, tenderfoot, knucklehead and by some trick of fate had good leaders and coworkers that showed me the ropes all along the way. My pinnacle achievement was as an advisor to Presidents, staff, and Department of Defense Joint Chiefs, and 4-Star Commands at the policy and plans level. I humbly submit that survival meant making sure no one knew my name or recalled my face or voice all while making them believe they were the source of the ideas I fed them. If you don’t smell like bait and wiggle your bootie in a crowd, the sharks won’t eat you alive.

During my active service I saw first hand the things that go wrong and how poor decisions are implemented poorly. I became devoted to trying to solve the critical failures that plague governance and operational implementation. I found that senior leaders are too far gone to change and so I focused on the up and coming members that showed exceptional talent and capability. I’m happy to say, I see most of them now sitting in the middle and senior seats ready to step in. We all agree, the nation must start over. There is no other way to save this country from a devastating end. So we must focus on the rebuilding.

Rebuilding Trust, Purpose, and American Unity

This is my speech outline I prepared for civic engagement. Details will follow in upcoming posts.

The story of America is not finished. The next chapter is ours to write.

I. The Question Before Us

• America has endured periods of division before.

• The challenge is whether Americans still believe they share a common future.

• Ask: What still binds us together? What must be repaired?

II. Three Forces Pulling America Apart

• Social fragmentation

• Institutional mistrust

• Natural-world pressures

III. Society: The Fraying of Shared Life

• Social cohesion and shared identity

• Economic inequality and opportunity gaps

• Cultural polarization and identity conflict

IV. Government: Restoring Trust and Competence

• Institutional trust

• Political polarization

• National competence and execution

V. Natural Forces Shaping the Future

• Climate stress

• Technological disruption

• Geopolitical competition

VI. The Deeper Issue: America Needs a Shared Story

• Nations survive on meaning as well as policy.

• Historical renewal: Progressive Era, New Deal, Civil Rights Movement, Innovation Boom.

VII. What Will Save the Nation

• Rebuild trust

• Rebuild competence

• Rebuild community

• Rebuild meaning

VIII. Conclusion

• Unity is not the absence of disagreement. It is the presence of commitment.

• The nation remains worth arguing for, not against.

If you found this outline useful along with the chart to provoke your own thoughts and opinions, I ask you to apply these overarching topics to your own opinion and the details you know and witness regarding the rapid decline of America. This is number 2 in a series of papers and a Novel that outlines the fall of the current nation as it exists today and the rebuilding that must follow.

“Unity is not the absence of disagreement. It is the presence of commitment.”

I like the bit about “story.” A n antique may be worth $x. If it has a story, it’s worth $XX. In any training or marketing there’s a basic tenent regarding “story.” Don’t sell or teach product, sell history, accountability, market (presence) tenure. Best selling truck for forty years. However that tenet has been turned into a license to lie, like everywhere else. Most towing capacity in its class. However every brand says the same thing. No added sugar. (We added some shit that will kill you.) Now, suppose the entire psychology of blame was banned in America we would hope divisional rhetoric would cease and the original canons returned to discourse. That would help. A lot. In fact in your lengthy list of things to change you could simply state “no more blame.” It would force people to work together because hey, it’s not whitey or darky or queers or foreigners’ fault. Think like engineers. The two pieces of track don’t meet, the train’s on the way. Do we point fingers or do we fic the fucking thing? Taking finger pointing out of the equation gets shit done. If there’s no one to blame, well then, hell. Let’s get ‘er done.
