The Island 25

The Breath of Connection

Connection is not granted. It is recognized. When the mind grows quiet, the world steps forward to meet it. In that meeting, a new kind of seeing begins.

In a moment of fashion wizardry Renate’s T-Shirt now has matching pants belt loops so her explorer’s belt remains pleasingly visible emphasizing her excellent waist to hip ratio. A MS CoPlot AI image generated by the confused author.

Light folded inward around Renate’s hand, gathering in a slow spiral. The constellations dimmed, then pulsed once, a breath drawn through ionized air. Warmth deepened in the air until David felt it on his face and neck.

β€œIt’s not showing me the island’s physical transformation,” Renate said quietly. β€œIt’s showing me its memory.”

He stepped closer, watching the faint glow trace her arm like a living vine. β€œWhose memory?”

β€œThe island’s,” she whispered. β€œAnd ours. It’s converging.”

The wall shimmered, revealing faint spirals beneath the constellations, patterns echoing the glaze she had painted days before. The same geometry. The same rhythm.

β€œIt’s been waiting for us to remember what we already knew,” she said.

David looked up at the shifting light patterns. The air felt heavier, as though it held all of time in suspension.

β€œThen this isn’t discovery,” he said. β€œIt’s recognition.”

β€œEvery bearer comes here,” she said. β€œEvery time the vine awakens, the island remembers itself through them.”

The chamber brightened. Constellations aligned into a single spiral reaching toward the floor.

Renate knelt and touched the stone where the spiral ended. Light spread outward, forming a reflection of memory, a mirror of everything that had ever touched the island. The floor seemed to be a liquid pool with ripples caused by the light refracting through it.

Faces shimmered in the glow: monks, artisans, wanderers, all carrying the same mark.

Renate whispered. β€œIt’s revealing our continuity with others like us.”

Light rose and enveloped them both. David felt the island’s pulse beneath his feet, and within his chest.

β€œNow it knows we’re listening,” she said.

The chamber brightened in a slow inward spiral, as though gathering itself for thought. The vine’s pulse settled into a steady rhythm that moved through her arm and into her chest, a recognition older than her lifetime.

Behind her eyelids, a constellation of memory formed. Each point carried a life. Each life carried a moment. Each moment sank into the island’s soil and remained there, waiting for someone to listen to its story, its history.

Monks carved the first spirals with steady hands. Artisans painted bowls with patterns they believed were their own. Bearers moved through the ages, each carrying the same quiet burden.

David’s voice reached her through the vision. β€œRenate, what do you see?”

She opened her eyes. The chamber breathed in a slow rhythm, as if the cave had lungs.

β€œI see the island thinking like a living being,” she said. β€œMemory moves through it the way water moves through roots.”

Light rippled outward, touching the pool, the stele, the carvings, the far walls. David felt the vibration beneath his skin, meaning without words.

β€œWe’re standing inside its recollection,” he murmured.

Renate stepped closer to the wall. β€œEvery bearer leaves a pattern. The next one feels the echo. The vine is a circuit that carries what came before.”

The constellations shifted, curving into a spiral that matched the vine on her arm. She placed her palm at its center.

A deep vibration moved through the chamber like a spoken truth.

β€œIs it speaking?” David said.

β€œIt is remembering,” she added.

Light expanded until the air itself seemed to dissolve into memory. She felt the island’s pulse move through forest, kiln, sea, and cliffs, every place where time folded upon itself.

The island had never waited for action. It had waited for attention.

The chamber brightened once more. Renate closed her eyes and let the warmth settle around her.

β€œThe island knows we are listening,” she said.

And the island began to reveal it’s truth like a dream.

  2. I don’t recall David having a beard before.
All those fast moving island memories and recollections plus Renate’s pulse moving vine tattoo must be stimulating the growth of David’s facial hairs.

    1. I think the Cave is also a time warp. Renate has gone through about 5 outfits and David has grown a beard. Also, later as an Easter egg for the end of this part, Renate regains her youth and looks 23 years old again. She was about 42 when she went into the cave. I honestly think it’s beyond crazy in the cave and that makes me think it might be generating that same gas that made the Greek Oracles high as a kite and able to predict the future.

      1. Yes, it probably is generating the same gas that made Greek Oracles high as a kite πŸͺ.

        1. I recently saw a video that claims hydrogen sulfide, the offense found in many farts is actually necessary for life. And so it appears sniffing farts could be beneficial to life. It also appears that hydrogen sulfide is found in many caves and not just in colons. I believe if I was in a cave that made me think I was spelunking in some beastly large intestine, I’d immediately be able to foresee my future if I stayed in that cave.

  3. This is some kind of mystical island. It seems to be turning back the clock for Renate tho Dan remains the same. I think the pear wine and hammocks are calling.

    1. AHA! You have uncovered a big clue. I’m having fun with Hans doing weird things in the images, but Renate is now tuning in to her full power as a daughter of Mother Earth. I’m Channeling the collab on the Monks in the Cave behind the waterfall, then the strange experiences in Senegal to this culmination. Of course, there must be a dramatic and maddening twist to the tale and no doubt, the hammocks and pear wine will be gainfully employed soon. My inner weird child is running amok with this.

      1. You’re leading us through time and space and I sense something surprisingly stunning is in the works . Senegal was a turning point in the life decisions for R and D. I too am enjoying HAN’S playful antics. I noticed the expression on David’s face here, he seems to appreciate that Renate has gone back in time… he’s wondering if he will be able to keep up.
Thanks for the exciting and fun write Dan.

        1. It’s almost like the images are leading the story, but certainly I intended them to be an integrated part of visualizing the scenes.

So.. Renate is a part of it, and David is being invited in, to become part of it?

Yes… a beard and decorative only belt loops. CoPlot is at it again!

    Thanks Dan! κ§β˜†κ§‚

    1. Thank you Resa. 😁 I’m having a lot of fun with this in comments. You got it right. Renate is the convergent connection with the island and David is also recognized as a key part of the covenant Renate makes with the island. So I’ve twisted this about as much as I can by replacing time and geological history with memory, and people with the rose-vine mark as those who have a special sensitivity to care of nature. The theme of returning to natural rhythms and patterns as we lived long ago is what Renate and David are doing but instead of writing extensively about them planting corn and learning how to use taro roots and leaves, we have a sentient cave doing all the heavy lifting in a mythical way. I have no idea how I dreamed that up. It just came to me unbidden.

      1. Very cool. “It”‘s like falling in love, or finding the love of your life. You don’t find it, it finds you.
        “It” found you.
        Looking to 26!
