Love and Other Maladies 3

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

Would you think less of me if I told you not only am I a scientist, I am also an ordained Aaronic Priest? My journey through the world’s religions started in my early teens and caught fire in my college years when I studied World Religions. I was shocked to find out there was more to religious history than the the doctrine of the United Methodist Church I grew up in.

I dedicated my life to learning the deepest secrets of the cosmos from scientific principles and the reasons why religion caused so much suffering. I was fortunate to travel the world and to learn from people of other cultures and religions and to judge for myself what was right and what was wrong.

There was an abundance of life lessons, more so than any university dedicated to theology. While I can easily say, I am no expert, I can say I have learned a great deal on the subject of human behavior and the fragility of faith based on trust of the unknown and unverifiable.

So what, you might say. Everybody has the right to believe what they want to believe and you would be right if that was your thought. We all have free will and personal agency. What we don’t have is the depth of understanding about consequences of free will and personal agency. We bristle at being told how to act, what to believe, and how to conduct ourselves in public. We disagree with the current war of ideologies that have melded into political intrigues.

If you are an aesthetic that has renounced the world to live in poverty without possessions, you may be less affected by the slashing wounds of social upheaval. It matters now if you are liberal, moderate, or conservative because no matter what you choose, you are hated by the other two. Or, so it would seem if one is a fan of main stream news and the internet. It only matters who has power, wealth, and the means to enforce rules. To resist means to suffer. Some suffer greatly, others suffer gladly, and still others move quietly between the seams of dogma and indignation.

How can anyone survive with their mental health intact during this period of the final apostasy? Saint Thomas’ book of the new Testament was removed from current Christian bibles because he documented the words of the Christ that were counter to the desire of early church leaders to aggregate power and wealth and strengthen their uncomfortable alliance with Kings and Tyrants.

In my own words, St. Thomas wrote that Jesus said if you are looking for Heaven in the sky then the birds have already arrived in Heaven before you. This admonition of the followers was followed by an explanation. Heaven is within you and each person chooses their level of Heaven or Hell. This does resonate with the newest revelation of self empowerment and self love as being necessary and not selfish.

I navigate this world of woe unencumbered by ideologies, theologies, governments, edicts, superstitions, and other maladies that destroy kindness, compassion, and true charity to the less fortunate. I focus on living a virtuous life found in every religion known to man and practiced over the last 300,000 years. I work hard to abstain from pettiness and the pure hunt for pleasure although joy and contentment can be linked to pleasure.

I stand alone with my beliefs and cannot be corrupted by the multitude of sins available to us. I am human and thus faulty as a string of Christmas lights with several bulbs blown. I do suffer greatly from my mischievous cynical sense of humor. I try to be righteous, humble, and unpolluted by the world. This helps me stay unaffected by the vast suffering and iniquity of this angry blue planet. Then, I roll up my sleeves and do what I can to minister to the souls that cry out to me.

If I am not a scientist and Aaronic Priest, would you feel less interested in resolving your own challenges according to my message? I say, I don’t matter at all. What matters is you and what lives inside your heart and your fertile mind.

I beg you to go in peace and with love.

No this one is still active. Just went to a minimum paid plan to avoid the headaches with the free one. I don’t post often but do try to from time to time.

  1. The Gospel of Saint Thomas wasn’t written by Saint Thomas.

It was written by one of the many Gnostic groups prevalent in the 2nd Century AD.

Yes very much like Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the New Testament. And who was John from Patmos? Many theologians have different opinions. I think he wrote a better scary story than Stephen King. Revelations petrified me as a child.

      1. I personally believe that John from Patmos was the Apostle John the youngest of Jesus’ Apostles who lived to a great old age and died from natural causes unlike some of the other Apostles.

And you’re right the Book of Revelation is scarier than a Stephen King novel. 😯

I find the earliest beginnings of the Original Church to be fascinating. I don’t let classifications of non-canonical or even Irenaeus of Lyon heresies for the later more evolved and ultimately more powerful Church prevent me from objective review of the history of Christianity. I also study the other major religions and influential sub groups. The different counsels from 300 to the 1500’s bce continued to refine what was to be included and what doctrines would go forward for Christianity. Perhaps it was the first example of a quality management system executed by the imperfect intent of the day. God said let there be light and man said create a utility company and charge the poor for the light and the tax man said tax the money the utility charges for light and the lawyers petitioned the king for utility companies to be exempt from the tax and the poor were stirred to revolution. The rest is history.

Also, I find the prolific discoveries of the gnostic writings through history to be a very interesting look at how early “wisemen” viewed the creation and other teachings of the book of Moses. Quite different than the Protestant teachings and the final canon of the Catholic Church. We humans do like a great story.

      1. Yes, Gnosticism was an amalgamation of Platonism, Neo-Platonism, Hinduism and Buddhism (people forget that there were both Hindu and Buddhist schools of learning in Alexandria in the 1st Century AD and Alexandria was the place where Gnosticism originated), Christianity and some of the Persian religions such as Mithraism and Manichaeism.

On the books of the Old Testament and the Old Testament creation story, the Gnostics got a lot of their ideas from the Jewish Kabbalists like Simeon bar Yochai who lived in the late 1st Century and 2nd Century AD.

Ahh, I could dig through your knowledge banks for days Chris. It’s all fascinating and this is the point where the Church felt it high time to squash esoteric thought because people had wild imaginations and were dangerously smart. Kinda like today.

          1. People these days do have wild imaginations but they’re dangerously stupid.

I’m not sure which combination is worse.

Humankind has finally blown a cork. The dangerously smart plot to rule the world while the dangerously stupid think it’s a good idea. The rest of us are left with a bewildered who farted look on our face.

  2. Fascinating.

I cut my teeth on religion of the strictest sort. It ended up completely destroying me as an adult and I lost all faith in God as a result. It took me a very long time to wrestle my way back into not only a belief in God, but an actual relationship with Him.

There are still some days that I have a deep, burning rage at certain mental, religious strongholds and there are days I have incredible breakthroughs.

Studying theology is one of my favorite topics as a result of all of this. However, I have found that Christianity is the only religion where God comes to us and meets us where we are, whereas all other religions are based on works (loosely interpreted and very much generalized.) I don’t know much about other religions, but as I allow God into my deepest fears and scary thoughts toward Him, He becomes more real to me.

I feel like I’m rambling now but all the books in the world cannot contain the depth of emotions and thoughts and growth one goes through when one embarks on such a journey.

I find your journey to be very real and relatable Larisa. There are many times where one’s faith can be shaken to the core of our being and even turn us away. The execution of religion by imperfect humans subject to the deep bias of our instincts can lead us far from the intent of religious foundations. The fact you were able to resolve your personal darkness into light speaks a lot about your strength of character. It is wise to study the beliefs of others because we need not give up our beliefs in this study. We stand to gain a greater vision of humanity and our endless striving to be something greater than the raw instincts and emotions rooted in our unconscious will to survive. You have a beautiful story to tell.

      1. This is a beautiful comment, thank you. I appreciate what you said about turning the darkness into light—however, I still have a lot of darkness that I keep uncovering. That’s actually why I created my blog. I wanted an outlet for it.

I have long since realized that the USSR with its militant atheism and persecution of Christians instilled a deep sense of xenophobia and even fear of anything that’s different in my parents generation. I was raised with a legacy of communism and all of the tragedies that came with it, and it had also made me deeply wary of anything that was “other.” These are things/strongholds I’ve been breaking for a long time.

Fear creates islands out of people and we are not meant to be islands. We’re meant to live with human connection.

What a significant journey you have made to come as far as you have. Breaking free of the stranglehold of past empires is a difficult process and can take many years. It started with you and you have come so far. Blogging also helped me finally put away the deep scars of conflict I witnessed. You’ll know when you break free for good. In the mean time the struggle is real but the reward for perseverance is indescribable. We are meant to live with our tribe of family and friends and a sense of community and love. These are the worthy goals to aspire to. You will achieve freedom from the darkness because you know it exists and where it exists. The rest is about slowly letting the light in. I hope to learn much more of the light you share on your blog.

Yes! I have connections in high places. 😇. Other than that, I’m just one step ahead of the seven deadly sins like everybody else. This was a recent achievement that goes with my retirement plans. I’m a bit of a heretic compared to the guys that started in their late teens. But, they don’t have the Void to shout into like I do.

    1. Thank you so much Elizabeth! I am most content when I can hear the stories others can tell as it paints a magnificent picture of how we live through the iniquity and challenges of life to find true beauty and kindness among ourselves. This angry blue planet makes us grateful for the smallest experience of something or someone who brings light and hope into our life. With such a connection, we can continue on with our journey.
